How to Hoop Difficult Items: Socks, Bags, and Collars

Sarah Jenkins 2025-10-23

When the Item Doesn't Fit

Traditional hooping involves sandwiching the fabric and stabilizer between two rings. But what about a thick backpack or a tiny baby sock?

The "Floating" Technique

This is a game-changer. Instead of hooping the item:

  1. Hoop only the stabilizer (preferably adhesive tearaway or use spray adhesive).
  2. Stick the item ON TOP of the hooped stabilizer.
  3. Use the "basting box" function on your machine to stitch a temporary box around the design area to hold it in place.

Magnetic Hoops

If you are doing production runs, invest in a magnetic hoop (like Mighty Hoop). They snap together automatically, reducing wrist strain and allowing you to hoop thick items like Carhartt jackets with ease.
