Troubleshooting Bobbin Issues: The Hidden Enemy

Mike 'The Mechanic' 2025-10-16

It's Not Always the Top Thread

Beginners often blame the top tension knob, but 50% of tension issues originate below the plate.

The Drop Test

Take your bobbin case (with bobbin inside). Hold the thread tail. Drop the case like a yo-yo.

  • If it doesn't move: Tension is too tight.
  • If it falls to the floor: Tension is too loose.
  • If it drops a few inches and stops: Tension is perfect.

Lint Build-up

A tiny piece of lint under the bobbin tension spring prevents the spring from applying pressure. Use a business card or a pin to slide under the spring and clear debris.
